Fallout from what has been dubbed as “Black Friday” for online poker in the United State continues. On Friday, the US Department of Justice indicted Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars, and Absolute Poker owners and payment processors on nine counts including bank fraud and money laundering.
Three of the defendants are currently in custody. Bradley Frazen is the only one that has been arraigned so far. Today, he appeared in New York where he pleaded “not guilty” to the charges in the indictment. He was then released on a $200,000 bond. John Campos appeared in a Utah court on Monday and was released on a $25,000 bond. He must appear in New York court tomorrow. Chad Elie must also appear in court in New York tomorrow as well.
Fallout from the pullouts of PokerStars and Full Tilt have been felt across the board and have prompted several changes. On Saturday, Full Tilt Poker announced that they have canceled the Onyx Cup poker series. Next, many of the Sunday guarantees on both sites were significantly dropped. FTOPS #1 was reduced from a $3 Million guarantee to a $1 Million and the Sunday Million on Pokerstars was reduced from $1.5 Million to $1 Million.
In addition, several sources have confirmed that both the PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge and the PokerStars.net Big Game have both been canceled by Fox. In addition, ESPN has removed future NAPT programming from their schedule. They have also removed any advertising for Pokerstars from their site and the “Inside Deal” program with Bernard Lee has been removed from the site.
Also, the deals between PokerStars and the Wynn, as well as the deal between Station Casinos and Full Tilt Poker are no more. The Wynn released a statement on Friday stating that they are backing out due to the indictment and Station Casino’s deal with Full Tilt was dependent on licensing, which does not appear to be a likely in the United States anytime soon, if ever.
In a move that is expected to be mimicked by other sites, Victory Poker has also decided to leave the United States market. Dan Fleyshman, the CEO of the site, stated on twitter, “Asked the Cake Network to block U.S. players from the Victory Poker site. They are supportive of my decision. Hope it gets regulated 1 day!” He also felt that taking on the US government in this current climate is not wise.
At the time of the writing of this article, UB and Absolute Poker still allow players to play in real money games on their sites. Bodog, DoylesRoom, Lock Poker, and Cake Poker are all running in a business as usual mindset.
We will keep you informed on the latest developments from this story as they occur.
